A major sinkhole appeared in downtown Ottowa at about 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning, bringing traffic to a standstill as it left a gaping hole in one of the major thoroughfares. The hole stretched almost the entire width of Rideau St., across from the busy Rideau Centre shopping mall, at the corner of Sussex Dr.
One of the witnesses on the scene, Darren Hodder, claimed that he first noticed something was wrong when the power in his office was shut off. Hodder ran to his office window, i.e. located above the Rideau Centre, and saw a crane backing away from a hole in the middle of the street. Soon after, he claims, a water main broke and the hole began to fill with water and pavement started to fall down into the hole.
Another witness nearby, Andre da Costa, explained that “water was just gushing” until the cave-in spread from one side of the street to the next, causing a parked black van to fall into the hole. He elucidated that “there was this puff of . . . I’m not sure what it was . . . maybe it was water, maybe it was dust in the sinkhole,” adding that “shortly after that puff of dirt, you could see the car just tilting and then (it) just toppled into the sinkhole taking a light stand with it.” Police has confirmed that no injuries were reported due to the incident.
That’s ok, corrupt, do-nothing mayor watson will just get his frog buddies in kaybec to fix the problem. Over and over and over. Instead of local tradesmen, watson almost always calls on Gatineau.
