Authorities have confirmed the death of man in Birmingham hospital who was brought for “significant” burns from Glastonbury Festival less than 48 hours before the massive music event begins. After a fire at the camp site, the man was airlifted to the Queen Elizabeth hospital with life-threatening injuries. Emergency crews rushed to Worthy Farm in Somerset and treated the man for “significant burns” after they were called at about 5.10pm on Monday.
According to Avon and Somerset Police, they were treating the man’s death as “unexplained.” A police spokesman revealed that “we were called by the fire service after reports of a man on fire at the Glastonbury Festival site at about 5.20pm last night.” It was added that “the man suffered serious burns and was taken by air ambulance to Southmead Hospital in Bristol,” and “he was transferred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, where he sadly later died.” The spokesperson stated that “the man’s family have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this time. Our enquiries are continuing but we are treating the death as unexplained and do not believe it to be suspicious.”
South Western Ambulance Service spokesman, Melanie Glanville, explained that he was airlifted to a specialist burns unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham but she did not know how the incident happened. The ambulance service was joined by the Wiltshire Air Ambulance, the Great Western Air Ambulance and the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service. The Great Western Air Ambulance flew the man to hospital.
