York region bus collision leaves one dead in Richmond Hill

The York Regional Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision which occurred on Bayview Avenue, south of Major Mackenzie Drive East, in the Town of Richmond Hill.

On Thursday, June 24, 2011, at approximately 4:30 p.m., York Regional Police responded to reports of a collision between a motor vehicle and a York Region Transit bus. Investigators from the Collision Reconstruction Unit attended and learned that a southbound York Region Transit bus, being operated by a 29-year-old Scarborough man, was struck head-on by a northbound 2001 Mercury Marauder, being operated by a 34-year-old man from Thornhill.

The driver of the Mercury was transported to hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

A 51-year-old Richmond Hill man, who was a passenger on the bus, was taken to hospital where he was treated and released.
