According to a latest report, USA is building drone bases in Horn of Africa and Arabian Peninsula. This is being expanded in order to combat the Al-Qaeda threat that exists from these regions. Earlier on, drone bases were only present in Pakistan. This expansion is implemented to counter the terrorist groups in Yemen and Somalia.
The report outlines the areas where these secret drone bases are being formed. In Africa, the base is located at Ethiopia and another one at Seychelles. This is done to counter Al-Shabab which is the Somalian terrorist group that has control of the country. The CIA is also building a secret airstrip in the Arabian Peninsula so it can deploy armed drones over Yemen.
A US official told the Wall Street Journal that “We do not know enough about the leaders of the al-Qaida affiliates in Africa. Is there a guy out there saying, ‘I am the future of al-Qaida’? Who is the next Osama bin Laden?”
The process has been defined by officials as “long-term deliberate effort where we used what we could (until) we got the locations we wanted.” Speaking about the expansion of the plan, they said “Operations in Saudi are (the) only new expansion to this plan. The rest has been working for over a year when we long ago realized danger from AQAP.”
