The Supreme Court of Pakistan declared the secretary of the election commission of Pakistan non-cooperative and seeking undue measures instead of following the orders of the court.
Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry and Justice Khilji Arif Hussain heard the petition filed by former Prime Minister (late) Benazir Bhutto, Barrister Zafer Ullah Khan, and Imran Khan to remove the bogus list of voters adding up to a total of 27 million votes to ensure transparent and non-influential elections as promised by the ruling party.
Taking the case forward, the two-member bench of judges instructed the secretary of ECP to discard the old list of voters and come up with new and updated list of voters at the earliest, to which instead of working on the orders of the court, the secretary wrote a letter to the Prime Minister informing that he was facing “undue pressure” to remove the existing voter lists.
The secretary present in the court at the time of proceeding also accepted that he wrote to the Prime Minister but insisted he did not mention any specific institution putting pressure on him. The court ordered the secretary to produce the original letter before the court in the next hearing and criticized the working of ECP as it’s a constitutional body and is bound to follow law and order as instructed by the Supreme Court, further questioned the authenticity of the body to conduct unbiased transparent elections.
