CCL Semifinals set
First-leg games in the semifinal phase of the CONCACAF Champions League will be played on Wednesday, March 28, when Toronto FC hosts Santos and Pumas welcomes Monterrey to Mexico City. A week later, on April 4, the teams will meet again to determine this year’s finalists.
In quarterfinal action, Toronto FC won 2-1 at the LA Galaxy on Wednesday to take their series 4-3 on aggregate and become the first Canadian team to advance to the semifinals. Jamaican international Ryan Johnson put the Reds ahead with his 5th goal of the campaign in the 34th minute, while Nick Soolsma (67′) scored for game-winner after a Ty Harden (55′) own-goal leveled the score.
Also, on Wednesday, after losing 2-1 at the Seattle Sounders a week earlier, Santos returned home to rout the U.S. side 6-1 thanks to two goals each from Herculez Gomez (49′, 68′) and Christian Suarez (8′, 76′). Oribe Peralta netted his 10th career CCL goal in the 10th minute and Carlos Ochoa closed out the Guerreros goal account with nine minutes left on the clock.
On Tuesday, Monterrey capped off a 7-2 aggregate victory over Morelia with a 4-1 win at home. Humberto “Chupete” Suazo scored twice (44′ pk, 71′), giving him four goals over the two legs. Luis Ernesto Perez (61′) with a penalty kick of his own and Walter Ayovi struck for the winners with his first-ever CCL goal in the 82nd minute.
On Thursday Pumas reversed a 2-1 defeat in El Salvador to beat Isidro Metapan 8-0 in Mexico City. The result tied Champions League records for the most goals in a match, as well as the greatest margin of victory. Eduardo Herrera (26′, 63′) doubled his CCL output for the season with two goals. Six other players accounted for the goals, including Fernando Espinosa, who scored for the first time in the competition since Sept. 16, 2008, in a 1-1 draw with Panama’s San Francisco.
Teams play final preparation matches days before start of Olympic Qualifying tournament.
Days before its opening match at the Men’s Olympic Qualifying tournament in Nashville, the U.S. defeated the Atlanta Silverbacks 3-0 on Sunday. Head coach Caleb Porter used 18 players and FC Dallas-standout Brek Shea led the team with two goals.
Before 22,750 fans at Houston’s Robertson Stadium on Saturday, Honduras defeated El Salvador 2-0 thanks to goals from Ever Alvarado and Eddie Hernandez.
Also, on Saturday, Mexico got past the Senegal U-23s, 2-1, in San Francisco. Defender Miguel Ponce scored both goals for the winners from the penalty spot.
After losing 1-0 to Canada on Friday in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Trinidad & Tobago defeated local club Clarema 6-1 at Lockhart Stadium. Sean De Silva scored two goals for the Caribbean side. Canada closed out its Florida camp with a 1-0 loss to the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers on Sunday.
Vicente elected president of Belize FA
Ruperto Vicente was elected president of the Belize Football Association Sunday in Belmopan.
Vicente, a former referee, succeeds Bertie Chimilio who had served in the position for 12 years.
Also elected were Sergio Chuc (senior vice-president), Rawell Pelayo (vice president), plus Marlon Kiylen and Cruz Gamez (both as members).
