He confirms the festive season ended peacefully because of the combined efforts and hope to continue even when there are no celebrations.
“We need peace and stability always. We don’t have to wait until such occasions like Christmas and New Year then we begin planning to curb crimes. That is not good idea. My Ministry has decided to continue with the same spirit in efforts to make tranquillity prevail even for tomorrow.”
He recognized the efforts contributed by the public and urged the communities to inform or report any crimes to his forces on time and help identify suspects easily by availing information.
The Minister clarified that the responsibility of addressing issues of insecurity lies in the hands of each citizen and not security forces or leaders.
Mr Suleiman advised the community to isolate criminals and not to hide information for law enforcement officers to carry out their duties speedily.
The minister appreciated the peaceful atmosphere in Eastern Equatoria during the celebrations of Christmas and New Year.
Mr Suleiman added that people should enhance their cooperation with security forces to make the state more peaceful than the previous year and benefit from development.
The State Deputy Governor, Jerome Gama Surur recently stated that the year 2013 will be for building peace and co-existence in the state to realize development in various sectors of the economy.
According to Surur, people must take independence of the nation by working hard and becoming self reliant.
He encourages the state citizens to promote peace by desisting from criminal activities in order to experience the fruits of peace as this would not be easy but requires commitment.
Recognizing the importance of social, political and economical unity, Surur appeals on the state citizens regardless of ages and religious background to work hard and help the state government in maintaining peace by working together.
He strongly discourages cattle raiding saying that the cattle should be made productive instead of destructive.
The Commissioner for Police in Eastern Equatoria State, Major General Henry Danima Odu also acknowledged that the community policing established in the state has worked to reduce crimes especially during festivities.
The commissioner said that his forces combined with the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) are working together with state communities in combating crimes and their results are fruitful.
He advises the communities to cooperate saying if responsible citizens notice anything related to crime, they must promptly report to community leaders and police forces together so they consequently be apprehended and held in custody for investigations.
Danima revealed that committees comprising of community representatives and security forces have been formed to work collaboratively with respective communities to combat the crimes in Torit, Ikwoto and Kapoeta South.
A plan to have all committees formed in order to oversee the activity is expected to be replicated in each county.
The leader appreciates the ongoing efforts by both communities and the forces especially his police forces saying the communities are so welcoming and so cooperative.
The leader also revealed that an emergency line was made public through radio announcement which continue to be useful to each citizen for calling security forces for help if any.
