Almost two weeks ago when the Bow River banks overflowed pouring out water in downtown Calgary, it seemed as if the Stampede was probably over already. However, due to the extremely commendable effort and courage of the residents, the city is getting ready for its annual Calgary Exhibition and Stampede. A reporter commented on the situation, saying that “the fact this parade is even taking off today speaks to the resiliency of the people of this city. This parade route a week ago, parts of it were literally under water and here we are today getting ready for the start of the 2013 edition of the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede.”
There is still a long way to go for the cleanup to be completed in Calgary and other southern Alberta communities that were hit hard on June 20. Analysts have predicted that Calgary alone had more than 75,000 people evacuated from their homes. Whereas, the Town of High River also had an additionally 13,000 residents evacuated, most of which were only allowed to return home a few days ago. Whereas, some have still not be allowed to return back home due to safety concerns.
It was reported that “people are optimistic, people are happy, people want a chance to celebrate and that’s exactly what they’re going to do.” The reporter added that “they were out last night putting out chairs, reserving their places for today’s routes, families that have been here for decades made sure they were out here again today to show their support.”
