Mark SuttonMark Sutton, who parachuted into the London Olympics 2012 opening ceremony dressed as James Bond, dies in a wingsuit flying accident in the Swiss Alps.

According to the reports, Mark Sutton, 42, has died on Wednesday after crashing into a ridge near Martigny, close to the French border, during a three-day wing-diving event, after jumping from a helicopter in the aerodynamic suit.

The former army officer played the role of Daniel Craig’s Bond in for a section of the London Games 2012 curtain-raiser which saw the spy jump alongside another stuntman dressed as Queen Elizabeth II with Union flag-emblazoned parachutes after flying to Stratford by helicopter from Buckingham Palace.

Wing divers used to wear special jump suits which increase the surface area of the body and act like a parachute wing, allowing users to glide through the air at high speeds. It was reported that Sutton had jumped from a helicopter before the accident.

Swiss Valais canton police have stated that a British man had died after jumping with a companion from a helicopter, wearing a wingsuit above the Grandes-Otannes area, close to the French border.

In a statement they said the pair jumped from a height of 10,826ft (3,300m) at around 11am yesterday and had planned to land close to the hamlet of Le Peuty, near Trient.

According to the preliminary investigation, it has been suggested that he hit a ridge.

A rescue helicopter arrived just after a few minutes of the incident but the British stuntman was pronounced dead at the scene. However, he is yet to be formally identified.
