Sources have confirmed that a Canadian Forces soldier based in Petawawa, Ont., Craftsman Kyle Sinclair, has passed away. According to Lt. Jean François Carpentier, Craftsman Kyle Sinclair died while in the Royal Canadian Dragoon lines at CFB Petawawa on Friday. He explained that the incident took place at one of the base’s tank hangars.

Lt. Carpentier mentioned in his remarks that Sinclair was doing normal and routine maintenance work on a vehicle at the time of his death. Thereafter, nearby soldiers immediately performed first aid on site before he was moved to Pembroke Regional Hospital. Sinclair was later medically evacuated to the Ottawa Hospital’s Civic campus, but died late on Friday night. The Canadian Forces National Investigation Service has announced to be investigating the scene of Sinclair’s death. 27-year-old Sinclair joined the Canadian Forces in December 2012 and was based at CFB Petawawa since the spring of 2013. He was serving as a member of the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, currently involved in job training with 2 Service Battalion.

According to Lt. Carpentier, the base is saddened by Sinclair’s death. He mentioned that “in any case, the loss of a Canadian soldier is really devastating on the military community. Especially on the base, where we feel close-knit with the local community.” Lt. Carpentier added that “our condolences … go out to the family and friends of Craftsman Sinclair.” The Department of National Defence is expected to issue a press release on Sinclair’s death later today.
