"Imaginary Women on a Very Short Leash"

CSULB contemporary dance professor Rebecca Bryant and performing artist Nehara Kalev combine forces to present their modern dance mashup Imaginary Women on a Very Short Leash at Santa Monica’s Highways Performance Space. The high-octane women of Texas’s Big Rig Dance Collective light up the stage with the latest installment of Bryant’s critically acclaimed Suite Female series. Wielding a video camera to capture, frame, project and manipulate the live action onstage, the four female performers and their onstage female “producer” dig up ideas of viewing, labeling and power by controlling the visual representation of themselves. This smart ensemble work serves up a mixture of explosive dancing, willfully absurd props, campy gestures, and poetically-charged solo moments. Kalev premieres an excerpt from Autobiography Of Lies, a full-length solo theatrical dance piece featuring an awe-inspiring aerial performance.
