LA Opera's "Schicchi/Pagliacci"

Two iconic directors join forces for an exhilarating LA Opera season opener. First, Woody Allen directs Placido Domingo in Puccini’s hilarious short opera, Gianni Schicchi. In this one-act, Domingo plays the titular character, a lawyer. When greedy relatives enlist Schicchi’s help to rewrite the will of a dying relative, the lawyer devises his own ruse to help unite two young lovers. This opera includes one of the most popular of all arias, “O Mio Babbino Caro.” Next, Domingo switches reins, conducting Franco Zeffirelli’s epic production of Pagliacci. Set in a contemporary urban landscape, the dark side of love unfolds when an enthusiastic, oblivious audience watching a play cheers as a desperate wife fights for her very life against her cuckolded husband. Opera fans won’t want to miss this must-see evening at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.
