A Calgary man wanted in connection with a 2009 jailhouse assault has been arrested in Ontario after a year on the lam.

With assistance from the Ontario Provincial Repeat Offenders Parole Enforcement (ROPE) team, Jimmy Minh NGUYEN, 20, was taken into custody at a home in Toronto on Thursday, March 17, 2011.

Officers in Ontario were tipped off to NGUYEN’s location by investigators with Alberta’s Integrated Fugitive Apprehension Unit. He was arrested without incident and will be returned to Calgary on Wednesday, March 23, 2011.

On Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009, at 4:30 p.m., a man was waiting in a dinner line at the Calgary Remand Centre, when he was assaulted by two other men.

The attackers punched and kicked the victim. There were no weapons used in the assault.

Correctional Peace Officers were able to stop the assault, but the victim suffered serious injuries.

An investigation was conducted by the CPS Serious Habitual Offender Program (SHOP), with the assistance of the CPS Homicide Unit and the Calgary Remand Centre.

In February 2010, police issued a warrant for NGUYEN, charging him with aggravated assault. He had evaded capture until last week.
