Leader of opposition Action Congress of Nigeria (CAN) and former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was called before the court and arraigned today, before the Code of Conduct Tribunal. Tinubu has been charged with operating 16 foreign accounts between 1999 and 2007, while he was in service as the governor.
The Tribunal adjourns trial to October 26th, 2011 as an amended charge was served on Tinubu today and he has asked for time to go through it for preparing his defence.
Tinubu had remained in the dock for about three hours, for the arraignment before Justice Umar Yakubu, the president of the tribunal. However, the president agreed upon giving time relaxation by putting on emphasis on the importance of replacement of 3 new counts of charges with the 10 old ones. He is of the view that it was needed to conduct the trial in a summarily, speedily and expeditiously manner and this delay is given to serve this purpose.
In the start of the session, the prosecution counsel, Dr Alex Iziyon (SAN), had filed an amended charge against Tinubu and urged the tribunal to read the charges to the accused in order to take his plea. But defence counsel, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), challenged the jurisdiction of the tribunal in the prosecution of his client. He argued that the tribunal could not hear the matter because the prosecution had just filed the new charge and that his client needed time to study the charge before he could take his plea.
