The Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) Spokesperson, Col. Philip Aguer has told the media in a press conference that some Lou Nuer youths had attacked an SPLA garrison in Pibor leading to 4 of the youths killed and 3 wounded.
“It was unfortunate that the youths attacked an SPLA garrison in Pibor on Monday 2nd January 2011 but they got it ‘hot’ and retreated.” Col. Philip Aguer said.
“The wounded were brought to Juba but on the SPLA side there were no causalities because they were in tranches. The Lou Nuer youths were committing suicide because the SPLA were armed,” he added.
Col. Aguer explained that the SPLA is sending in more forces to Pibor under the instruction of the Government of South Sudan. He called upon the Lou Nuer youths to return to their villages, there are indications that they are moving towards their territories though there is still communal fighting in the area.
“We have a brigade in Pibor area and when the attack happened they found themselves engulfed in a huge conflict that they can’t stop,” he elaborated.
The UN peacekeeping forces are monitoring the rampant attacks in Pibor with airplanes in order to inform the Government of South Sudan in advance about the movement of the Lou Nuer Youths.
Col. Aguer revealed that documents captured from the later George Athor indicated that more weapons are to be supplied to his forces in South Sudan by the Government of Khartoum. The weapons in the hands of the Lou Nuer youths and the Murle were distributed by the late George Athor.
In a related report, on the 30th of December 2011, radio Omdurman in Khartoum announced that 79 combat ready vehicles and 25 trucks of Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) rebels had entered the Republic of South Sudan but the Minister of Information and Broadcasting confirmed the allegations to be outrageous.
“This is a white lie, there is no involvement of the Republic of South Sudan to JEM and our president has repeated this several times. It is an irresponsible statement from a country which got independence in 1956 to accuse a country which got independent five months ago,” Dr. Benjamin Marial said.
“We would like to make this very clear that we are not supporting any fighting groups in South Sudan especially from conflict prone areas in Sudan.”
