The negotiations that resumed in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa last Tuesday entered the first week with discussions on security issues at the borders.

South Sudan government spokesman Dr Barnaba Marial told the press that yesterday’s talks dwelt on security and were led by the South Sudanese Defence Minister John Kong and his Sudanese counterpart Abdul Raheem Mohammed Hussein.

The two sides resumed talks on remaining post -secession issues after the United Nations Security Council and the African Union threatened to impose sanctions on the two countries if they do not address the remaining matters within three days.

Part of the South Sudan delegation returned to Juba yesterday for what analysts said are further consultations on the matters on the table in Addis Ababa.

Cabinet Affairs Minister Deng Alor who led part of the delegation back to Juba on Monday told press that the two sides in Addis Ababa have agreed to discuss the pending issues including oil transit fees, border demarcation, the status of the disputed Abyei region, citizenship and mutual cooperation.

“What is important is that the two sides have agreed on the agenda as laid down by the roadmap of the African Union and the UN Security Council”, said Dr Marial.
