With the splendid play from Hashim Amla and Graeme Smith, South Africa closed Day 3 of the first Test against England remaining in a superior position. Amla and Smith made a new South African record against England by adding 259 runs for the second wicket as they went past the previous best of 257 between Gary Kirsten and Smith at Lord's in 2003. The only wicket lost on day 3 was that of Smith, when he got out to Bresnan on 131. Afterwards, England remains under domination as Amla (183) and Jacques Kallis (82) put on an unbeaten 143-run stand to help South Africa end the day at 403/2, with 18 runs lead.
Graeme Smith became successful at his attempt as the first South African and only the seventh player in Test history to register a hundred in his 100th Test on the opening session on Day 3. Smith was provided with a good support by Hashim Amla, to put South Africa in a strong position.
England's bowling coach, David Saker has called the pitch "subcontinental" and expects it to deteriorate, which could be helpful for the leg spinner Imran Tahir to ignite his South Africa career. Smith is also hopeing the same. "It is quite dusty and dry. There is a turn available and it will be a good opportunity for Imran to get in. His form looks pretty solid. I don't want to put too much pressure on him but, on day five, if we are bowling for the win, he will have to play a prominent role."
