Sherbrooke Factory Explosion Results in 2 Killed, 19 Injured

An explosion was reported around 1:30 p.m. ET at Neptune Technologies et Bioressources Inc. in the industrial area on Pépin Street. The company claims to manufacture health products from krill oil, which contains omega-3 fatty acids.

Two dead bodies were discovered from the explosion site. The spokesperson of Sherbrooke police, Const. René Dubreuil, declared that the bodies were found on Thursday afternoon while the emergency workers were clearing out the debris. Few hours later, another man was found from the debris. Dubreuil claims that “she was hiding in the debris and she was hiding because she was scared.” Dubreuil added that “the person was found by firefighters when they made a search of the building to find people who were missing.”

Overall 19 people were injured and rushed to the nearby Sherbrooke University Hospital Centre (CHUS). Out which , four were shifted to the burn unit at Montreal’s Hôtel-Dieu hospital for better car and one was kept in the intensive care unit, disclosed the spokesperson of CHUS, Sylvie Vallières. Two of the victims even had to be hurried by airlifting though a helicopter.

The two burn victims transferred to Hôtel-Dieu hospital received burns to more than 30 per cent of their body including burns to their face and respiratory tracts. The director of nursing at the hospital, Céline Gervais, stated that “we have quickly tried to identify all the patients we received so we could communicate with families.” “We opened up places to hold families in this hard time.”
