Accepting its defeat, the Awami National Party (ANP) has announced to sit in the opposition benches in the National Assembly and Senate as well as provincial assemblies. ANP Chief Asfandyar has accused the terrorist groups to have hampered their political campaigns which led to their massive defeat. He believes insurgents have targeted their party because they raised voice against extremism.
The ANP has won only one seat in the National Assembly. The party has decided to provide full support to the government for eliminating terrorism and solving other key problems. Asfandyar claims that had the terrorist elements not affected their campaign, the ANP would have received majority vote on May 11.
“Pre-poll attacks on ANP corner meetings were a conspiracy to keep us out of the electoral process, which eventually made it impossible for us to connect with our voters. I can safely say that it also became one of the reasons for our defeat,” said Asfandyar.
The ANP chief termed the terrorist attacks as pre-poll rigging which consequently benefitted rival parties. He said over 31 attacks were carried out on party workers and leaders which killed 61 party workers. He said his party was shocked at the inhumanity of Chief Election Commissioner Fakhruddin G Ibrahim who was not only informed about the situation and but also urged to take action.
“It was almost like we were in a wrestling match, where our hands and legs were tied, while our opponents were left free,” said Asfandyar.
