epa sealThe rift between the Democrats and Republicans seems to grow day by day. According to recent reports, the White house is all set to veto the Republican bill that asks for the formation of a separate committee to analyze EPA rules and regulations. The Obama administration has argued that this will greatly undermine the performance of the EPA under the Clean Air Act as it would create loopholes for various toxic chemicals as it would block certain landmark rules.

California Sen. Barbara Boxer, the chairwoman of the Senate environmental panel, said “It is outrageous that in this century we have to protect a law that has … proven itself over and over again in its health benefits and its benefits to this economy.”

Franz Matzner, the climate and air legislative director at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), has condemned the bill saying that “The leopard has revealed its spots and [the amended bill] is now just a straight-up rollback of the Clean Air Act.” He went to the extent of saying that the amendments mount up to “a Trojan horse for a fundamental attack on the Clean Air Act.”

The official White house statement regarding the bill issued by the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is “While the Administration strongly supports careful analysis of the economic effects of regulation, the approach taken in (this bill) would slow or undermine important public health protections.”
