Milos Raonic21-year-old Canadian defeats Berlocq in straight sets to reach the third round

Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON) advanced to the third round of the BNP Paribas Open on Sunday night, an ATP Masters 1000 event currently underway in Indian Wells, California. 

After receiving an opening round bye as the tournament’s no. 27 seed, Raonic defeated Carlos Berlocq of Argentina, ranked no. 38 in the world, 6-4, 6-2 in the second round. Raonic hit 19 aces in the match and broke serve four times. He hit consecutive aces to close it out in just over an hour. The 21-year-old is now 16-2 on the season. 

With the win, Raonic sets up a much-anticipated third round encounter on Tuesday with World no.3 and 16-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer. The Swiss took out American Denis Kudla in his opening match. This will mark the first meeting between the two players. Raonic has two wins over Top 10 players in 2012, both of which came in Chennai over Nicolas Almagro and Janko Tipsarevic en route to his second career title. 

Meanwhile, Daniel Nestor (Toronto, ON) and his partner Max Mirnyi of Belarus won their first match in Indian Wells on Sunday, defeating Nicolas Almagro and Mark Knowles 6-3, 7-6(3).
