On opening day of the 2nd test match, Nick Compton and Jonathan Trott scored centuries in a 210-run second wicket stand and lead England to 267 for 2 till the close of day being in control of game against New Zealand.
Trott came to join Compton when captain Alastair Cook got out on a false shot for 17 at 26 for 1. Both played with great brilliance to complete their tons. Compton was out soon after his century after getting caught by Ross Taylor at first slip off left-arm spinner Bruce Martin. Trott was 121 not out and Kevin Pietersen was 18 not out at stumps.
Earlier New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum won the toss and decided to bowl as declared his intention on the eve of before the match to bowl first if he won the toss and he kept that promise. He reasonedhe thought that his bowlers were a more potent weapon on the opening day of a Test than his batsmen. McCullum was also relying on past experience that the pitch at the Basin Reserve provides most assistance to bowlers in the first session on the first day before becoming ripe for batting friendly. But the assumptions remain miscalculated as the hands on experience showed the opposite.
