The leader of British Columbia’s teacher union declared to stand against any hurdles that might come in the way of the ongoing strike, let it be the government legislation. The union’s president swears to resist the upcoming law ordering all the strikes to be halted.

“We’ll be consulting with our members determining what to do,” said British Columbia Teachers’ Federation president Susan Lambert.

“I can tell you that teachers will not accept legislation that erodes the quality of the school system. We will do something to continue to resist such legislation.”

According to a proposed bill by the Labour Relations Board, all the strikes would be considered illegal until Aug. 31. However, the bill will roughly take two weeks to pass into law, which means the strike will only be legal until the legislation is passed.

According to the bill under consideration, whoever resists the law will have to pay stiff penalties. Lambert says she is aware of all the hassles posed by the strike but said the BCTF was overlooked by the government. Almost 41,000 B.C. teachers went on a three-day strike starting Monday.

"They will be organizing meetings in front of the schools early in the mornings, and maybe some leafleting and then some general meetings and study sessions and planning sessions," said Lambert.
