A 25-year-old protester was allegedly shot dead by the armed forces in Baramulla. The incident enraged the people of Jammu and Kashmir despite denials from the army as it claims to have cautiously opened fire in clear air.

The protestor was killed amid tensed demonstrations against the hanging of terrorist Afzal Guru and the suicide of a youth in Pulwama. The police have filed an FIR against the unit in Baramulla while curfew has been clamped in 10 police station areas in Srinagar, Baramulla and Sopore.

An army spokesman said, “An aggressive mob of over 250 people attacked a foot patrol of the army in the town yesterday. Despite repeated warnings and caution, the mob surrounded the patrol and people from within the crowd started attacking army personnel.

“The patrol was soon outnumbered, leaving some of them injured. A person out of the mob assaulted the army personnel with an iron rod creating a life-threatening situation. To extricate themselves; the patrol fired, aiming in the air, which could not have resulted in any injury as the place of the incident where the person died was well away from the location of the patrol, and could have in no way been affected by the firing by the patrol in the air.”

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah broke down in the state legislative assembly last evening when the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) walked out in protest over the killing of the young man in Baramulla.

The locals are also putting pressure on the Omar Abdullah government and the Centre to repeal the Armed Forces Special Powers Act. Saifuddin Soz of the Congress has officially requested the Union Home Ministry to repeal the act.
